A new poll shows Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz would have a tough time winning a fourth term in office if an election were called today.
The city-wide telephone survey by Probe Research and the Winnipeg Free Press asked Winnipeggers who their preferred candidates would be in a hypothetical mayoral race against former mayoral candidate Judy Wasylycia-Leis and four other right-wing challengers.
The survey showed a crowded field of right-wing candidates would split the vote and give a significant advantage to a strong left-of-centre candidate like Wasylycia-Leis. The poll showed she has the support of 45 per cent of decided voters, while only 22 per cent of voters would be either likely or somewhat likely to vote for Katz if he runs again.
The only declared candidate in the 2014 election, Gord Steeves, received 25 per cent support from decided voters. Other potential candidates include Paula Havixbeck (11 per cent), Brian Bowman (11 per cent), and Scott Fielding (eight per cent).
