A Winnipeg family is confused and looking for answers after their 10-year-old son was shot in the leg on Thursday night.

"It's your child, why does this happen, that is my thing why and how could somebody do this," said Jessica Desjardins, the mother of Robert Booth who is recovering in hospital.

Booth said he was walking down an ATV track with his two cousins in Middlebro, roughly 186 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg, when he said, out of nowhere, someone in a black truck pulled up and fired a bullet into his left leg.

"It felt like a big rock hit me in the back of the leg, I didn't feel anything in the front,” he said.

Desjardins immediately called 911 and an ambulance took Booth to Steinbach, where an X-ray showed the bullet was still in his leg.

Now he's is recovering at The Children's Hospital of Winnipeg, where doctors will decide whether or not it's safe to operate.

"It’s is just frustrating, scary and sickening, we're just trying to hold it together," said Desjardins.

She’s thankful her son was not more seriously hurt, but can't imagine why someone would shoot a 10-year-old boy in the first place.

"If it was an accident per say and you are out doing these things you should be more aware of your surroundings,” she added.

Meanwhile, Booth is left in hospital, instead of enjoying his summer off school.

"Doesn’t make sense, maybe they were doing something bad and fired a shot, that hit me," he said.

According to Booth’s mother, RCMP could not find the black truck that the boy said he saw before the shooting.

She explained that police have been in constant contact with the family, but so far they have no suspect and have not confirmed what type of gun they think was used.

RCMP officers attended the hospital where they said they are gathering evidence and examining the bullet/pellet.

They said they are following up on leads based on the information provided by the boy and other witnesses.

RCMP said no arrests have been made.
