Homeowners will have new companies picking up their garbage and recycling.

City Council has approved new 7-year contracts for Miller Waste and GFL Environmental to take over collection in a year.

The deals could be worth as much as $251 million.

The winning bidders replace Emterra and Progressive Waste.

Some councillors and Union CUPE are critical of the contracts, because the option of bringing some of the service back in house with the city was not explored.
