People in southwest Manitoba wanting to fly to Toronto will soon have an option closer to home.

WestJet will add a direct flight from Brandon to Toronto beginning June 28. The flights are being booked on a summer schedule until Sept. 5, with a possibility of being extended if demand is high enough.

Brandon Mayor Rick Chrest celebrated the announcement.

“After tireless efforts by the City of Brandon and, indeed, the entire southwestern Manitoba region to lobby for this service, to finally see an eastern flight option offered at the Brandon Municipal Airport is definitely worth celebrating,” he said in a news release.

Flights will leave from Brandon in the early morning and arrive in the late evening on scheduled days.
