A downtown carjacking came to a sudden halt when a vehicle crashed into a building at 541 Portage Ave., the site of CBC Manitoba on Tuesday.
According to Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) on May 21, around 3:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Portage Avenue and found a vehicle had crashed into the Young Street side of the building.
Police said the owner of the vehicle had entered a nearby business while his wife and an 18-year-old, the man's child, waited inside the parked car.
A man then entered and attempted to steal the vehicle, but a collision soon occurred.
Police said the woman was assaulted on the ground, and the suspect ran off.
An ambulance was called, but the woman was not seriously injured.
The teen had exited the vehicle earlier.
Officers spoke with witnesses on the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
