The jury in the Candace Derksen murder trial heard testimony Monday from a police officer who first interviewed the accused Mark Edward Grant back in 1984.

Grant faces a charge of first-degree murder in the case, which dates back to November 1984.

Derksen, 13, vanished while walking home from school in November of 1984. Seven weeks later, her body was discovered bound and frozen in a shed.

In court Monday, Menno Zacharias, a former deputy police chief, testified that a tip came into officers from Audrey Fontaine, who was Grant's girlfriend at the time.

She told officers she'd seen Derksen after the 13-year-old girl was reported missing.

Police questioned Grant in the remand centre on Dec. 10, 1984. He was in custody at the time on an unrelated matter. The interview lasted for about 20 minutes, court heard.

Zacharias, who was a sergeant in the youth division at the time, said that Grant was co-operative but was not deemed a suspect at the time.

In May 2007, Grant was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after a cold-case police unit began investigating.

The court case is set to continue this week.
