A former Winnipeg city councillor claimed victory for the Liberals in Saint Boniface–Saint Vital.
Newly elected MP Dan Vandal walked into a raucous victory celebration at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre.
Vandal has been preparing for this night for the past two and a half years since he decided to run for the Liberal Party of Canada.
Asked what kind of role he expects to play in a Liberal majority and if that could include a cabinet position, Vandal said that's a conversation for another day as he just wants to savour his party's massive victory tonight.
"We have a fantastic leader, we have a fantastic campaign. I've been knocking on doors for over a year and talking to people from St. Boniface-St. Vital and obviously that's been resonating. I couldn't be prouder than this evening," said Vandal.
Vandal won the seat formerly held by Conservative Shelly Glover.
Last election, Conservative Shelly Glover won her second consecutive seat in the riding, defeating Liberal Raymond Simard by almost 8,500 votes.
First elected in 2008, Glover decided to retire in April 2015.
Other candidates in the riding this election included Conservative François Catellier, Green Party’s Glenn Zaretski, and New Democrat Erin Selby.
The Saint Boniface–Saint Vital riding has elected Liberal and Conservative candidates, but never NDP.
