Environment Canada is explaining why it doesn't tweet or text out tornado warnings.

It said the lack of tweeting or texting alerts has nothing to do with our country's language laws, but rather technical issues.

Prairie-based tornado chaser Greg Johnson is with TornadoHunter.com. He criticized Environment Canada for not doing more to alert Canadians in tornado prone areas.

The weather service said it's already testing social media, and met with Twitter Thursday to resolve technical issues.

"We have to make sure that the anti-spam detection systems don't think that's a malicious use of Twitter," said Ken Macdonald, executive director of national programs with Environment Canada.

Macdonald said the reason forecasters in the United States can tweet tornado warning is because they have small offices that send tweets to local areas.

He said our system is automated and serves a much larger area, sending about 15,000 severe weather alerts a year.

Environment Canada hopes to have the technical problems with Twitter resolved by next summer.
