The family of a 19-year-old man is in mourning after he was fatally attacked early Tuesday morning in the Weston area of Winnipeg.

Jordan McIvor's death is the seventh homicide of the year in the city.

"We're going through something terrible…and we want this (suspect) brought to justice," said Evangeline McIvor, Jordan's aunt.

Around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to a back lane in the area of Cecil Street and Notre Dame Avenue, behind a Manitoba Housing Complex.

It's believed a fight started inside a suite at the complex and spilled out into the alley.

A neighbour heard the fight and called 911 but said it was already too late.

"I checked three times for (Jordan's) pulse. I couldn't find it. I checked for breathing and he wasn't breathing," said Chuck, a witness to the incident who asked that only his first name be used.

"He laid there and cops tried to revive him," said Jason King, who saw police respond.

It's believed Jordan was stabbed right beside his heart. Witnesses said the victim was also beaten, possibly with two-by-four boards full of nails.

Witnesses said McIvor's girlfriend saw the incident and was calling for help.

"She's all heartbroken…I feel sorry for her," said Nick Barto, a friend.

Jordan's family is also dealing with the loss of their loved one.

"He's going to be always here for me (in spirit)," said Daniel McIvor, the victim's brother.

The housing complex where the incident took place has security to respond to incidents. Officials plan to review what happened and will meet with tenants and police.

Officers have not yet made any arrests in Jordan's death.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
