A fire has destroyed the Paladin Restaurant on Des Meurons Street in St. Boniface, say officials.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at around 6 a.m. Sunday and were still on-scene dealing with the fire around noon.

Officials say so far, damage is estimated at $1,000,000.

Paladin waitress Bessie Johnston told CTV News the cook noticed the fire when he got to work early Sunday morning. She said he was the only one in the building, and got out safely.

"I'm just beside myself right now," said Johnston. "I've  been here for like seven years and now it's gone. It was like a little family and it's sad."

The cause has not been determined.

Officials advise motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area due to road closures.
