A local organization helping young Manitobans deal with challenges such as poverty, addiction and abuse is celebrating a major milestone. Saturday Marymound marked 100 years in the community.
13-year-old Victoria Marceniuk is in her final year at Marymound School before she transfers back into a community school. She knows the benefits of a helping hand very well.
"I had a bit of misbehaviour problems and this school put me on the straight path I'm supposed to go one," the Grade 8 student said.
She's not alone. Marymound has been offering programs and specialized education for young people dealing with issues such as abuse, family violence and addiction for 100 years.
It's a milestone being celebrated with a reunion and cultural festivities. It's also a chance to recognize the impact the organization continues to have.
"Everyone is an individual," said Gwenda Nemerofsky of Marymound. "Everyone is treated with love and care and understanding and is supported no matter what."
Every year, the organization serves 3,000 young people and their families. Since it was founded 60,000 youth have been offered support.
