The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said the Misericordia Eye Care Centre will stay open for eye emergencies when an overnight closure takes effect this week.
The WRHA said Tuesday the centre will continue to see patients with urgent eye issues 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It said patients can visit an assessment clinic at the site during the overnight hours.
This comes after the WRHA announced Misericordia Urgent Care Centre would close overnight to patients starting July 5. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
One doctor and a nurse will staff the urgent care centre overnight, to continue to care for patients who came in during the day and evening, and to deal with any emergency situations which may arise at Misericordia Health Centre.
The WRHA said during overnight hours, patients with urgent eye issues can register for the Eye Assessment Clinic at its 99 Cornish Ave. entrance.
“Ophthalmologists will be available for urgent consultations from emergency, other doctors and optometrists as per usual,” said Dr. Lorne Bellan, an ophthalmology surgeon based at Misericordia and department head, University of Manitoba.
