The new downtown police headquarters will sit empty a while longer. The city has previously said the police would be moving in this fall.

Now, officials told the city's finance committee the building won't be ready for the police service until December.

The project has faced several delays. The committee heard there's been additional deficiencies identified and warranty work that needs to be addressed.

The building was the subject of two city audits after construction went $75 million over budget. Last December, RCMP raided Caspian Construction in relation to the project.

The Winnipeg Police Service released a statement on Thursday about the opening in December 2015.

“It is expected the Service will begin the physical move on Monday, December 21st when divisions and units from across the service will begin migrating to the new site on a staggered basis,” said the WPS.

“I can’t help but note that December 22 is the winter solstice, the official beginning of a new season,” said WPS Chief Devon Clunis. “It appropriately opens the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Winnipeg Police Service.”

CTV has learned only one unit will move in on that day and the rest of the building will be filled over the next seven months.
