One lucky ticket could claim the biggest lottery jackpot in history.

An estimated US$1.5 billion is up for grabs in the United States Powerball lottery on Wednesday; a prize that has many Canadians flocking across the border to buy tickets.

"We bought $26 worth of tickets, and I've seen people buy $200 worth of tickets right in front of me," said Glenn Nanka, who drove from Winnipeg to Pembina, ND Tuesday. "But like everybody says, you've just got to play one ticket. One ticket's all it's going to take to win."

The odds of winning: one in 292,000,000.

The lucky winner could very well be Canadian, as travellers are allowed to play Powerball.

"You do not have to be a citizen or a resident to play the game. You can be a tourist," reads a line on the lottery's website.

But ticket holders take note: an obscure US law makes it illegal to import lottery tickets into the United States from a foreign country. Anyone who brings their ticket back to Canada before finding out they won may need to consult a lawyer before returning to the states to claim their prize.
