Winnipeg police have arrested two men after four robberies and one attempted robbery during an eight-hour crime spree Feb. 24.
On Friday afternoon a man stole about $200.00 of merchandise from a store at Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Dakota Street. When an employee confronted the man, he said he had a gun and fled with the stolen goods, police said.
Fifteen minutes later, the suspect stole about $150.00 of merchandise at a business on Pembina Highway. When confronted, he again threatened the clerk indicating he had a gun and fled, said police.
A few hours later, at 7:45 p.m., the suspect arrived at a gas station on Jefferson Avenue, where he stole cigarettes.
Just 15 minutes after the gas-station robbery the suspect hit a hotel vendor on Portage Avenue, accompanied by another man. The pair tried to leave the vendor without paying for beer. The suspect again said he had a gun and threatened the clerk. But this time they fled empty-handed, Winnipeg police said.
At about 9:15 p.m. the suspects went to another hotel vendor near Chief Peguis Trail and Main Street and stole about $100.00 worth of merchandise and fled the scene, according to police.
Officers patrolling the area saw a vehicle fleeing, pulled it over and two male suspects were arrested, police said. A number of items stolen earlier that day were found in the suspects' car, but police did not find a gun or other weapon.
Stephen Bartholomew Egesz, 28, has been charged with robbery with a weapon and theft.
Darrel James Works, 25, is facing multiple charges including robbery with a weapon and disguise with intent.
No one was injured in the robberies.
