The Portage Terriers will play for a national title on national television Sunday night at 7 pm in the final game of the 2015 RBC Cup.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions punched their ticket to the championship with a decisive 6-1 victory in the semifinal Saturday night over the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Melfort Mustangs.
The Terriers will faceoff against Ontario’s Carleton Place Canadians, the only team to beat Portage in the round robin of this year’s RBC Cup.
The Terriers had to battle back from a 1-0 deficit in the semifinal against Melfort after David Heath of the Mustangs opened the scoring in the second period.
It was all Portage after that.
Garick Gray and Taylor Friesen had even strength goals just over a minute apart to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Brett Orr made it 3-1 with a shorthanded goal before the end of the second.
Zach Waldvogel solidified Portage’s lead with a power play marker in the third.
Jordyn Boyd also had a power play goal and made it 5-1 less than a minute later.
The Mustangs pulled their goalie with just over six minutes to play and Boyd added an empty-netter to give the Terriers a 6-1 victory.
Sunday’s championship game will be shown live on TSN.
