The province released a spring flood update on Monday as parts of the province were hit by heavy snowfall.
Officials said they’re assessing the effects of the recent snowstorm on possible spring flooding and will have a clearer idea once the snow stops falling.
The March flood outlook is being finalized by forecasters and will be released next week.
Under a long-term weather forecast, a late spring melt and the possibility of rainfall occurring at the same time could have an impact, said officials.
“Both these factors could contribute to increased flooding,” said the province in a release Monday.
Unlike the flood of 2011, soil moisture levels in 2012 were much lower leading into this year, said the province.
“I don’t think we’re going to have anything close to 2011, but of course that all depends on how much rainfall we get following the spring melt,” said Doug McNeil, deputy minister of transportation and infrastructure.
