A fire in a northern Manitoba community forced hundreds from their homes evacuated early Saturday morning.
Just under 230 people from Red Sucker Lake First Nation have been flown from the community to Winnipeg and are now staying at a hotel in the city. The first two flights, with about 20 people from the First Nation, left for Thompson around 5:00 a.m. Saturday. They have also been diverted to Winnipeg.
Jason Small, from the Canadian Red Cross, said the organization received a call to commence the evacuation late Friday night.
Small said the decision to evacuate comes from both the First Nation and the Federal Government.
He said the Red Cross has prepared for situations like this and that’s why they were able to act quickly.
Only one more flight is scheduled for today as the situation continues to be assessed.
There has been no decision made yet on when people can expect to return home.
