Winnipeg officials said residents should start preparing for overland flooding now as the heavy snowfall and a quick spring melt could likely cause water levels to rise.

Environment Canada said this winter Winnipeg has been hit with the most snow it has seen since 1996-1997.

Officials with the City of Winnipeg’s public works department said the recent heavy snowfall and upcoming spring melt could pose issues.

Some local stores said they’ve seen a spike in business with more requests for inline sewage valves and sump pump installations.

Anthony Malanchuk of Basement Systems Winnipeg said people should prepare their basements early.

“If you don’t want to wait until you have a problem. You should be proactive,” he said.

They suggest having submersible sump pumps on hand to get rid of water as it starts pooling in your yard or window wells.

Though overland flooding is the immediate concern, pumps can also help avoid flooding by seepage, said officials.

Winnipegger Irene Ambrozik said she's worried about overland flooding.

"I don't want any more water in my basement," she said. Ambrozik plans to prepare by clearing snow away from the perimeter of her home.

On Monday, provincial officials said they’re assessing the effects of the recent snowstorm. The province’s March flood outlook is being finalized by forecasters and will be released next week.
