Rule changes could be coming around the use of backyard fire pits in Winnipeg.

The city's protection committee agreed to study what other places do when it comes to fire pits.

Some councillors are receiving complaints about excessive smoke.

Councillor Russ Wyatt voted against the measure over concerns this could lead to permits and fees.

Some municipalities require permits, others fine pit owners for not following guidelines.

But councillor John Orlikow, who voted in favour of the review, said he does not support permits or changes to the current bylaw.

City staff will come back with a report in six months.
