Multiple weather watches and warnings were in effect for Winnipeg and parts of southern Manitoba on Friday afternoon. A number of Winnipeg streets and underpasses were flooded from the heavy rainfall.
“The cluster of severe thunderstorms has now moved into the Winnipeg area and is moving north. Numerous reports of torrential rainfall have been received, with 50 mm possible in localized areas. Some areas could see wind gusts to 90 km/h. Intense and frequent lightning is also expected,” said Environment Canada around 2:15 p.m.
Later, it said in the hour between 2 and 3 p.m. when the storm was strongest in Winnipeg, 68.1 millimetres of rain was recorded at Wilkes and the Perimeter. In general, the city received 30-45 mm.
At 8:30 p.m., the Logan underpasses on Route 90 and Keewatin closed due to flooding during the afternoon rush hour. Police said six vehicles got stuck in the water on Route 90. Two remained stuck before 9 p.m.
The City of Winnipeg reports power outages affected out traffic lights at 12 locations.
By 8 p.m., it received one report of basement flooding, 35 cases of sewer back-up and nearly 100 reports of plugged catch basins.
By 8:30 p.m., Environment Canada had lifted all severe thunderstorm watches and warnings across Manitoba.
