Some Delta Beach residents asked to leave their homes have stayed behind to protect their properties.

The RM of Portage la Prairie issued mandatory evacuation orders on July 6 to some Delta Beach residents.

Larry Rushton feels the evacuation order came earlier than necessary. He said the area is still safe but it could change quickly with the wind. In that case, he'd leave but, for now, he and several neighbours are staying to surround their homes with sandbags.

The 2011 flood damaged his family's cottage and, even after government compensation, they're out tens of thousands of dollars from the repairs.

They also built up the shoreline and bought a special sea wall to make sure their property was at the new level deemed safe, but are not sure if that will be enough.

He said the 2011 flood cost cottage dwellers, year round residents, businesses and the government millions of dollars. He doesn't understand why they have to go through this again.
