A storm that blanketed parts of southern Manitoba with snow hit the village of Miami, Man. especially hard, dropping almost 60 cm of the white stuff on March 4 and into Tuesday.

The community’s school was shut down for two days and area residents were asked to stay home in order for crews to safely clear snow off the streets.

According to Environment Canada, by Tuesday morning, 56 cm of snow had fallen on Miami, Man.

“We’ve got two of our main snow plows that are out. We’ve got snow blowers and our loaders, so we’re just dealing with it,” said Jason Vanstone, reeve of the RM of Thompson.

Vanstone said the RM is dealing with the snow as best it can, but admits it will be several weeks before things in the village are back to normal.

Residents were out helping one another clear the snow, with some hoping that winter was already a thing of the past.

“We thought we were through the worst of it. I had grass showing on my lawn last week and this pretty much takes care of it. I have drifts up to my bedroom window,” said Dennis Jones.

The 56 cm snowfall shatters a record for the community. The previous record for Miami was 34 cm of snow in 1966.
