Safety concerns are heating up in St. Boniface over the closure of two older fire stations.

The South St. Boniface Residents Association is worried a plan to consolidate two fire halls will impact response times.

It said the stations serve a heavily industrialized area including the property where a fireball explosion lit up the sky in 2012 at Speedway International.

The plan would see the two stations at Marion Street at Dawson Road and Autumnwood Drive at Cottonwood Road close with a new facility built in the area.

Last year, a city report said response times would not be impacted because of a new traffic management centre set to open late this year. The system would synchronize traffic lights to give emergency vehicles priority on the road.Safety concerns are heating up in St. Boniface over the closure of two older fire stations.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Chief John Lane said the stations require a lot of maintenance and have low call volumes.

Lane stresses the service will not move ahead with a plan that impacts service.
