A statue worth approximately $18,000 that was stolen from the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden was found at about 7:30 a.m. on July 1.

Residents of the area of the 100 block of Furby Street found the sculpture in the back alley of that block and called police.

No arrests have been made in the theft.

Police were first called on June 29 regarding the theft.

A bronze Leo Mol sculpture had been stolen from the garden in Assiniboine Park.

The sculpture was damaged when thieves removed it from its bronze base, said police.

A second nearby statue was also damaged.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-2877, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.

The recent theft is not the first time the sculpture garden has been targeted. In 2006, vandals pushed over a number of sculptures.

In 2008, the Assiniboine Park installed a new perimeter fence to help curb crime. The facility is looking at more lighting or security cameras. In 2010, the number of police officers that patrol parks was reduced from 14 to nine.

After the theft, staff members at the park made plea for the sculpture's safe return with no questions asked.

"If we can somehow get this statue back, that's our aim," said Lorne Perrin at the Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

Leo Mol, a widely acclaimed sculptor, died in July 2009.
