People sought closure at Tina Fontaine's memorial on the Alexander Docks Friday evening.

Social worker Serena Hickes didn't know her, but she called Fontaine a catalyst for change in Winnipeg.

"Tina just opened up even more hearts and said, ‘Enough. I'm done. We're losing too many kids,’" said Hickes.

On the docks, seven red dresses hang from an exhibition earlier this fall to bring awareness to missing and murdered indigenous women.

Hickes works with indigenous youth who come to the city from the north. She said the news that police had arrested a suspect in Tina Fontaine’s makes her “hopeful.”

“This is a momentous day,” she said. “There’s something really special when we finally are catching these monsters and bringing them to justice.”

Police have charged Raymond Joseph Cormier, 53, with second-degree murder. Winnipeg police officers arrested him in Vancouver on Dec. 9.
