New Democrat Wab Kinew has captured the Fort Rouge riding, beating Manitoba Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari in a stunning defeat.

CTV News Winnipeg declared Kinew elected in the riding, with Bokhari trailing well behind.

Bokhari fought an uphill battle during her election run, weathering controversies with multiple Liberal candidates.

Kinew also faced criticism during his campaign for misogynistic lyrics used when Kinew was a rapper, and for comments he made on social media from 2009 to 2010 that poked fun at women’s weight and living conditions on an Ontario First Nation.

The Fort Rouge riding had no incumbent candidate after New Democrat Jennifer Howard announced she would not seek re-election. She was one of five cabinet ministers who tried, unsuccessfully, to topple Greg Selinger as NDP Leader. She resigned from cabinet in November of 2014.

Kinew also beat Tory Audrey Gordon, Green Party candidate Grant Sharp, the Manitoba Party’s Matthew Ostrove, and Communist Party of Canada candidate Paula Ducharme.
