To mark the 30th anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope, Winnipeggers gathered in Assiniboine Park on Sunday to run, walk, take in performances and donate money to cancer research.

Carissa Nikkel, chairperson of the organizing committee of the Winnipeg Terry Fox Run, said more than 300 volunteers helped out with the event and she estimated that about 1,000 people would take part in the activities by the end of the day.

Last year's event in Winnipeg raised $50,000 through a silent auction, merchandise sales and donations, she said.

"Terry started the marathon of hope 30 years ago and so we continue it today, raising funds for cancer research, to be donated directly to cancer research," Nikkel said.

Fox was born in Winnipeg and he was recently inducted into the Winnipeg Citizens Hall of Fame.
