At least 10 communities across Manitoba set records for coldest temperatures on Tuesday morning.

Danny Blair, principal of the Richardson College for the environment said cold air we are seeing is coming directly from the Artic.

“The simple answer for the cold weather right now is the same story that we’ve had for several months and that is that cold air has been pouring down from the north day after day, month after month, because of the shape of the jet stream.”

The communities that broke temperature records include Thompson, Norway House, Berens River, Island Lake, Pinawa, The Pas, Fisher Branch, Gimli, Sprague, and Portage la Prairie.

Thompson was the coldest place on that list with a temperature of -27.8 degrees, breaking the record of -23.4 set in 1985.

In Berens River, the mercury dipped to -24.4, breaking a record of -21.7 that had stood since 1909.
