At 7:07 a.m. on Tuesday, a man with a gun broke into a business in Brandon by smashing the door.

The 35-year-old man in possession of a loaded 306 long rifle, entered C & R Sheetmetal located at Park Avenue East and Elmwood Drive.

Police said he took the owner of the business, a man in his mid-forties, and forced him out of the building and into the owner’s vehicle.

Police said the suspect then attempted to have the hostage drive to another location.

"[The suspect] indicated to the hostage that he wanted to go to another area and find another male. And at that time he was going to shoot the hostage, the male they were going to go find, and himself," said Sgt. Kevin McLean with the Brandon police.

Police arrived on scene before the vehicle could leave, as they were alerted to the situation by an employee of the business.

Guns drawn, police approached the vehicle, and the suspect surrendered himself. He was taken into custody at the time.

Courtney Weddall, who works at Cycle Boys Customs across the street, said she assumed it was a break-in as they’ve happened in the area before.

"You don't like hearing anything like that happening especially to people you know, but the main thing is that he's OK and they defused it right away,” said Weddall.

Police confirmed there were no injuries and no shots were fired.

Police said the 35-year-old suspect is known to Brandon police. He has at least two violent incidents on record, neither one included a weapon.

The suspect is facing 11 charges including forcible confinement.

Police confirmed the suspect knows the owner, but their relationship and motive for the taking is unknown.

The suspect is set to appear in court Wednesday morning and will remain at Brandon Correctional Centre until then.
