Flood-prone municipalities around large water bodies in Manitoba can expect some help to boost protection. The provincial government announced it is funding flood protection projects in five Rural Municipalities.

Premier Greg Selinger made the announcement in Gimli, where he promised to help to road access to Willow Island. The province will pay 90 per cent of the cost of improving the access road, up to $300,000.

The plan includes projects to protect several beaches around the province.

The RM of St. Clements will get help with diking efforts at Patricia Beach. The province will fund 90 per cent of that project, up to $800,000.

"The proactive approach taken by our provincial government in protecting our communities from flooding now and into the future will in the long-run show great savings for all Manitobans," said Mayor Steve Strang, RM of St. Clements in a news release.

Albert Beach in the RM of Victoria Beach will see new and upgraded flood protection measures, up to a maximum of $300,000. Also, flood protection work at Pebble Beach started in 2005 will get added funding to speed up completion.

The Village of Riverton will get funding to improve a community dike near a narrow channel on the Icelandic River. The project will provide permanent protection for Riverton High School.

The money for the flood fighting measures comes from the province’s Building Manitoba Fund.
