It appears Mayor Brian Bowman wouldn’t change a thing over his decision to suspend Deepak Joshi, despite the former chief administrative officer’s huge severance package.

Last week, the city released its annual salary disclosure list. It showed Joshi was paid $567,000 for three weeks of work in 2015. The former CAO resigned after Bowman suspended him. At the time, the Mayor said he’d lost confidence in the CAO.

The Mayor was asked Wednesday if he now regretted the move in light of Joshi’s payout.

“The end result is that we have a new CAO who has my confidence, has certainly a very successful career in managing large infrastructure projects, among other things, and who’s taken the unprecedented step at City Hall of making his contract public,” he said.

“Those are all positive signals, and that’s a result of all of the work that’s happened over the last year and a half.”

It’s unclear how much of Joshi’s compensation was severance. Bowman said he’s asked the province to change disclosure rules in order to publish a breakdown of staff salaries in the annual disclosure report.
