A church volunteer was slashed with a machete in an attack on Saturday outside the McDermot Avenue Baptist Church.

Police said a 60-year-old man approached a male youth wearing a balaclava in the 100 block of McDermot Avenue around 8:45 p.m.

The volunteer asked the suspect to leave the property, which is when he pulled out a machete and attacked the worker, police said.

Police were called and took a 17-year-old male youth into custody in the 800 block of Bannatyne Avenue near Tecumseh Street.

The volunteer suffered one laceration and is in stable condition, police said. A youth pastor at the church said the victim was back volunteering on Sunday. The victim did not require stitches.

The youth faces one charge of assault with a weapon, eight counts of failing to comply with a sentence, and he had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to comply with probation.
