The City of Winnipeg has launched a new travel time information system geared toward avoiding traffic delays during the construction of the Waverley Underpass Project.

According to a release, the new system will try to mitigate traffic delays caused by train crossings and construction. The city is putting up an electronic message board on northbound Waverley Street, before McGillivray Boulevard, that will relay travel time information to drivers who can then take alternate routes.

The city said they will use sensors to detect when trains are near, and to detect how much vehicle traffic there is in the area. This information will then allow crews to predict travel times.

“Winnipeg is the first city to use this innovative system,” said Cam Ward, the manager of the project, in the release. “We recognize there is a lot of construction happening in the area and we want to provide drivers with as much information as possible so they can make informed decisions about their routes.”

Different phases of the project will close certain lanes at different times. Trains will also still be a factor until the underpass is finished and open to traffic, the city said.
