The City of Winnipeg will get its first downtown off-leash park at the end of October.

The announcement was made Friday by Mayor Brian Bowman at Bonnycastle Park on Assiniboine Avenue, which is where the future park will be.

Bowman committed to a downtown off-leash dog park during his campaign.

The park will be 0.15 hectares, a portion of the existing park, and will be fenced in.

Inside the fence will be designated large and small dog areas, with agility elements.

The site was one of seven considered for the park.

The mayor said Bonnycastle Park was chosen based on public feedback.

Construction is set to start at the end of September/beginning of October and will take three to four weeks to complete.
