From iPads to Android platforms, tablets are expected to be a hot seller this holiday season, but adults aren’t the only ones hoping to get their hands on the devices.
Testers at Consumer Reports recently looked at five tablets specifically targeted to children. Each cost between $150 and $200.
“This year we’re seeing tablets with real Android operating systems and features like Wi-Fi and expandable memory,” said Carol Mangis of Consumer Reports. “These tablets are not just toys.”
Testers at Consumer Reports reviewed the tablets for things like display quality and battery life. They also asked 12 young experts to play games, read books and create artwork on the tablets. The group then rated the tablets on how easy they were to turn on and rated activities based on how fun they were.
“These tablets all come loaded with child-friendly games and learning activities,” said Mangis. “Not surprisingly, the kids liked the games the best.”
For youngsters who love to read, the Meep! Tablet from Oregon Scientific had the clearest display screen. The top-rated overall tablet was the Nabi 2, which had a friendly interface and the longest battery life.
