One of CTV Winnipeg’s own was honoured Friday night by the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Sports Director Shawn Churchill was inducted to the Media Roll of Honour for his contribution to sports journalism.

Churchill said he was speechless when he received the call from the MSSA.

“We don’t get into this business for awards or plaques or anything else like that, we get in this business to tell people’s stories, and that’s where we get the rewards,” said Churchill in his acceptance speech.

He thanked his family, Bell Media and Manitoba’s sports teams and athletes for trusting him to tell their stories.

Churchill’s career began in 1993 and he joined the CTV Winnipeg team in 2000. Some career highlights include the return of the Winnipeg Jets, covering their 2015 playoff games in Anaheim, road trips to cover the Grey Cup, World Curling Championships and two weeks in Europe to follow a Canadian hockey team.

He also serves as Master of Ceremonies for various community events.

The association also announced its Manitoba athletes and team of the year for 2015 – Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, Pan American Games double gold medallist swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem and the Portage Terriers.

The 60th annual Athletes of the Year dinner was held at the Delta Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman was the guest speaker and told the audience to expect an announcement in about a month’s time surrounding an outdoor game at Investors Group Field.
