They City of Winnipeg’s animal services department is at capacity, but hopefully not for long.
A summer dog sale is on until Tuesday, July 22, offering a deal on adoptions. For $99, you can get a new pet, with a microchip, all vaccinations, a spay or neuter and a proper licence.
Staff at animal services said licensing is a part of the overcrowding problem.
“I would say the main reason is that dogs are coming in without a licence and we don’t know who they belong to and we can’t give them back to their owner,” said Adoption Coordinator Lorna Verschoore.
Dogs found astray in Winnipeg without a licence are held for three days until being placed up for adoption.
Dogs with the proper tags are given a 10-day holding period, but are usually reunited with their families without ever setting a paw at the agency.
The summer dog sale runs Monday and Tuesday from noon to 5:30 p.m.
If you are thinking of adopting a dog, you are encouraged to bring your whole family to get to know the animal before you take them home.
Animal services is located at 1057 Logan Avenue in Winnipeg.
