Sanjay Kapoor is proving that parents will do anything for their child.

Kapoor is moving to British Columbia on Wednesday with his 21-year-old son Dhruv, leaving behind his wife and younger son. They’re moving to open a not-for-profit spinal cord wellness centre.

In 2011, a skiing accident left Dhruv with a shattered spinal cord and paralyzed him from the waist down. After years of rehab, he can now walk with a walker, but it hasn’t been easy since leaving the hospital.

“Once you’re out, there’s really nowhere else to go and you get into a really bad, depressive state,” said Dhruv.

The Kapoor’s are hoping to change that with their centre. They decided to open it in B.C. instead of Winnipeg, because the mild weather will make it easier for Dhruv to move around outdoors.

They also don’t want to take away from the First Steps Wellness Centre in Regina, which treats a number of people with spinal cord injuries from Manitoba.

First Steps is the only centre of its kind in Canada and they say, the reality is, hospital facilities aren’t up to standards when it comes to providing the care spinal cord patients need.

The Kapoor’s hope to have their centre in B.C. open this December.
