Starting Friday, drivers will be hit with stiffer fines for speeding through construction zones.

Fines will double in highway construction zones and other provincial routes.

If drivers go 80 km/h in a 60 km/h construction zone, the fine will be $573.

Later this summer, the same thing will happen in all urban construction areas.

The new law was put in to place after the death of flag woman Brittany Murray.

She was killed on the job in 2010 by a speeding driver.

New signs reminding drivers of the increased fines and locations when they're entering a construction zone will also be posted.
