Spring is almost here, which for many of us brings on the urge to clean the house.

Look up and down the shelf, and choosing a safe cleaning product can be confusing - even dangerous.

Some have the chemical dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which can help promote antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Hydrochloric acid is also found in some, which can burn your eyes and skin.

Ammonia is also used in some products, which can potentially damage your lungs and eyes.

Manitoba health officer Dr. Richard Rusk said while the cleaning products in stores can be dangerous, we shouldn't be afraid to use them. He said it's all about how we use them.

“If you are using them appropriately, following the directions, then that way you shouldn't be at risk at of some of the toxic dangers, said Dr. Rusk.

He said the best cleaner is good old fashioned bleach. Vinegar is also a useful alternative.
