A man died on God's Lake Narrows First Nation after being shot by RCMP at the site where a house fire killed three people the day before.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The fatal fire was reported Monday.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson said two members of the God's Lake Narrows RCMP were guarding the scene of the fire when an "incident" occurred and one of the officers discharged his firearm.

People in the community said police were on scene when a fight broke out.

An adult male was shot and was later pronounced deceased at a local nursing station.

The deceased man has been identified as Paul Duck, 52.

Duck was known as a hard worker and carpenter for the community. He was also a father to four children and a grandfather to five children.

He wasn't known as a violent man and Peter Watt, chief of God's Lake Narrows First Nation, said Duck wasn't known to drink.

As per RCMP policy, an external investigation will be conducted on the incident. The Saskatoon Police Service has been asked to investigate. On Wednesday, Saskatoon police said an autopsy confirmed Paul Duck died from wounds from two gun shots.

A three-year-old girl, a one-year-old boy and their great-grandfather, a respected community elder, died in a fire at the site on God's Lake on Monday.

"It's very devastating, especially the two babies that were lost," said Peter Watt.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs said this is the fifth fatal fire on a Manitoba First Nation within the past year.
