A man and woman were arrested after a hit-and-run near Salter Street and Kingsbury Avenue on Friday.

Police told CTV News a man in his mid-60s was crossing Kingsbury Avenue at a pedestrian crossing when he was hit by a vehicle around 4:30 p.m.

The male driver and female passenger drove off, but police arrested them a short distance away, Const. Jason Michalyshen said. He said the driver attempted to flee on foot, and the passenger got into the driver’s seat and tried to escape, but was unsuccessful.

Neither had a drivers’ licence, Michalyshen said.

Paramedics took the victim to hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable.

Mark Chornley was riding his motorcycle on Salter Street near Kingsbury Avenue when he saw a group of people helping the victim to the ground.

Chornley said traffic was busy at the time. He instantly started directing vehicles away from the injured man.

“What I didn’t like was the people that was driving around him. They were at times within a foot of this person on the ground,” he said.

“A gentleman coming in the other direction stopped his truck, parked his truck like a buffer so that nobody could drive close to the gentleman. He had to end up moving his truck again to block them. These people were trying to pinch around the curb, to go around this person lying on the ground.”

Michalyshen said both the man and the woman face charges under the Highway Traffic Act. A full list of charges is still pending.
