The Prairie Wildlife and Rehabilitation Centre is hoping to raise money in an effort to care for an abnormally high number of geese at its shelter this winter.

The centre said it needs a minimum of $3,000 to care for the birds.

During the last two weeks, roughly 12 geese were dropped off at the shelter in Ste. Adolphe, and there are currently at least seven geese that will be staying at the shelter over the winter.

Two of the birds are from Fort Whyte Centre, while the rest are from different parts of Winnipeg. The centre said many of the birds are weak because they waited too long to fly south, or they stayed behind because their mates died.

There are also still several geese being spotted that need assistance due to the early winter weather conditions.

If you spot a goose in distress, you can call PWRC at 204-510-1855. The centre advises not to venture near a body of water to try to capture a goose, as the water may not be completely frozen.

If you see a goose on land that needs help, you can throw a blanket over top of it to help capture it in a cage, or call PWRC.
