Winnipeg police have no one in custody and are still interviewing witnesses after a shooting in the River-Osborne area left two men in critical condition Saturday morning.

A call came in around 3 a.m. about gunshots heard in the area of Donald Street and Stradbrook Avenue. When police arrived, they found the two men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Police blocked off streets in the area and asked members of the public to stay away while they investigated. Shorty before 5 p.m., police announced they had cleared the scene and traffic was flowing normally.

A car with bullet holes in the windshield and Alberta licence plates, and a black SUV, remained on the scene hours after the shooting. The driver door of the car was left open and shell casings littered the ground.

Police could not comment on whether any suspects have been identified.

Donald Street between McMillan Avenue and River Avenue is closed to all traffic, along with Stradbrook Avenue eastbound from Scott Street.

Squash player Peter Reimer was one of 70 people who showed up for a tournament Saturday morning, just steps from where the violence took place.

Games continued in the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club basement, as officers from the homicide and forensic identification unit investigated above.

"It's terrible. Three in the morning. So it's pretty shocking to see it shut down," said Reimer.

“People are concerned. How could they not be concerned?” said Winnipeg Police Service Const. Rob Carver Saturday.

By afternoon, at least 17 evidence markers littered Donald Street.

Etched on concrete, red and blue lines leading to the grey car and the black SUV on Stradbrook Avenue.

All the commotion brought Mark Jackson out of his apartment. He watched police work for 20 minutes Saturday afternoon and his own ideas about why the grey car doors had been left open.

"When I look, maybe somebody was trying to get out of the car, or perhaps somebody going to see if they're okay," said Jackson.

Police haven't said how many shots were fired, how many people were involved, or where the suspect, or suspects might be now.

"We don't have any preliminary indication that this was random. I'm not saying it was targeted, but we don't have indications this was random, and this changes the nature of those concerns," said Const. Rob Carver.

Officers have been talking to witnesses, and hope to share more information soon. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
