Contractors cleared nearly 3,500 kilometres of residential streets in Winnipeg over the weekend while parking officers handed out thousands of tickets to enforce the residential parking ban.

A total of 6,697 tickets were written, worth more than a million dollars.

CTV News reported Sunday that at least some of those tickets were written hours after snow-clearing crews had left the area, causing some motorists to question the motives behind the parking enforcement.

"Did they meet their quota?" asked Vanessa Balchen as she held her $150 ticket in her hand.

But St. Norbert councillor Janice Lukes bristles at the suggestion parking enforcement around snow removal is a cash grab.

"There's a lot of situations that the plows have to come back,” said Lukes. “If they've got a vehicle on the road they don't want to damage it. These are massive pieces of equipment. Truly, in that 12-hour window, you must have your vehicles off the street."

The city says anyone who thinks they were issued a ticket in error can contact 311 or the Winnipeg Parking Authority.
