Members of Canada’s Armed Forces and local politicians gathered to dedicate a new park to the memory of veterans who fought in Hong Kong in the Second World War.

The Arden Seven Commemorative Plaza honours seven men from Arden Avenue who fought in the Battle of Hong Kong in December, 1941.

The plaza in Jules Mager Park at the corner of River Road and St. Michael Road features seven seats arranged in a semi-circle, surrounded by a stone ring with a stone arch over the entryway.

Hong Kong vet George Peterson chose the design and cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony Saturday morning.

“It’s very touching to have a memorial like this,” said Peterson. “The tranquility of being in here, it’s just tremendous, I have no words to describe it.”

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, MLA Kevin Chief, and Bob Holliday, president of the St. Vital Historical Society also spoke at the event.
