Winnipeg’s police chief has apologized for language used during a news conference about an indigenous women’s murder.

Last week the service announced an arrest in the 2014 death of Angela Marie Poorman. During a briefing with media a police spokesperson said the encounter between the victim and accused was a deal involving sexual services for cash and that that agreement lead to an argument.

Former police board member Leslie Spillett told board members Tuesday, this amounted to victim blaming.

Police Chief Danny Smyth agreed some of the words were insensitive, he apologized for the comments, and said he’s already talked to members in the department involved.
