A pair of pedestrians went to hospital Friday evening after being struck by vehicles in separate collisions.

The first happened around 6:30 p.m. when a pedestrian was struck by a bus near the intersection of Portage Avenue and Carlton Street.

One person was taken to hospital in stable condition and police had the westbound lanes of Portage Avenue closed while a transit bus with a cracked windshield was surrounded by yellow tape.

The second collision happened close to 8:00 p.m. at the intersection of Osborne Street and Brandon Avenue.

One adult was taken to hospital.

According to Manitoba Public Insurance, more than 400 pedestrians are injured by vehicles each year in the province.

The Winnipeg Police Service encourages pedestrians to take all possible precautions when crossing the street, particularly when it is dark and when road conditions are less than ideal.

“Physically, look at the driver, have that eye contact,” said Constable Jason Michalyshen, “OK, they do see me. They are slowing down and now I can safely proceed.”

Michalyshen said motorists also need to be aware of how the conditions impact their driving habits.

“If I needed to stop very suddenly, would I be able to?” he asked. “Sometimes a difficult question to ask but we, as motorists, have to be prepared.”
