The union representing city workers says phasing out private snow clearing would save taxpayers $3 million a year.

CUPE presented its own report on the costs of having union members do snow clearing.

Right now, 80 per cent of the work is done by private contractors.

CUPE said the savings could be achieved, despite the fact the city would have to buy new equipment and hire 150 new employees.

The union said the city crews and equipment would have to take over road work as well, in order to find the savings.

It says union members are better trained and safer than contracted workers and that would lead to savings with insurance, legal and other risk factors.

CUPE admitted it does not know the cost per kilometre to do snow removal.

A city report on the same subject could be released as early as Nov. 3.
